Missions & Charities we support
In addition to the Little Angels and Scouts, there are other activities we organise for children and young people.
There is our ‘Investigators‘ club which takes place during the Sunday service (except for All-age services and school holidays).
Clergy and church members are also involved with activities put on for the pupils of the Tudor Grange Samworth Academy with whom we share the building.
In addition to these relatively frequent or regular events, there are a number of gatherings we do maybe just once or a few times a year.
Some are seasonal, like a Harvest-time lunch.
This would be after a Sunday Morning Service usually in September. It is a ‘Bring and Share’ event when we bring some of our foods and enjoy those of others too.
Another seasonal event is a ‘Hunger Lunch’ taking place in March/Lent.
It is a bread and soup meal, and we each donate the money saved from a normal Sunday lunch towards one of our regularly supported Missions – Tearfund. Our Mission secretary gives us an illustrated and interactive talk about some aspect of Tearfund’s current work
A popular addition to the calendar has been a Quiz Night.
Originally a Harvest-time occasion, it is now moving to the New Year season. It is an opportunity to invite friends, neighbours and family to join in a closely contested evening and hear a gospel presentation.
We enjoy the occasional outdoor gathering too.
A variation on the Bring & Share lunch is a summer BBQ after the morning service.
Sometimes we venture a little further for a picnic, for example to Bosworth battlefield or Rutland Water.
In December, church members gather to sing carols outside ‘Iceland’, with invitations to our own Carol Service.
At times in the year a small group/groups will visit homes in part of the parish to see if there is any way in which St Christophers can be a help to the residents
Investigators
Children leave the Sunday morning service after a song or two to enjoy their own time together as ‘investigators’. We are fortunate in being able to use the Academy space for this activity, which typically includes art, craft, modelling acting etc. to help the children take in the bible stories.
On occasions the children will show or describe their work or activities to the congregation at the end of the service.
The time is led by two of our church members (DBS checked) and is suitable for children aged 4 years and upwards.
Activities with Tudor Grange Samworth Academy
Being situated within the Academy site, St Christophers is involved with activities with their students. Besides assemblies for Year Groups and at End-of-term, book reading of bible stories for the younger pupils takes place in smaller groups.
A recent event called ‘Prayer Spaces’ took place in the church. Pupils, 9-13 years old, were invited to pray interactively, with hands-on activities set around the Environment, Forgiveness, Refugees, the World, Calmness, and Feelings.
Similar events have been held across the country and ity is hoped to repeat the activity in future years.
