During World War I, millions of special copies of St John’s Gospel were given out in the trenches. In each was also printed the testimony of a war hero, plus a simple response card for soldiers to fill in if they wanted to follow Jesus.
Tragically, many bodies were only identified by the name on that card. But what hope mingled with sadness that those individuals had cried out to God in the midst of such horror.
There are so many mixed feelings around the subject of war – to celebrate or commemorate? To fight or to refuse? To wear a poppy or not? How should we respond as Christians who have given our lives to follow the Prince of Peace?
Our August preaching theme aims to help us explore some of these themes, and relate them to our everyday lives today.
